Food Club
Before Phillup and Alisha became Food Club members in 2023, rising grocery prices were stretching their budget thin. Despite juggling multiple jobs, fresh, healthy food often felt out of reach for their family.
Since joining Food Club, things have changed dramatically. “We have access to fruits and vegetables now that we wouldn’t have been able to afford before,” Phillup and Alisha shared. With their fridge now full of colorful, healthy options, they’ve embraced a new lifestyle—one that’s energized their family and transformed their health. “We’ve been focused on eating better… together, we’ve lost over 100 pounds!”
When barriers are removed and support is consistent, our neighbors thrive. Phillup and Alisha’s story is one of many that remind us how dignified access to essential needs paired with encouragement can create lasting change.
Outreach & Housing Access
Nancy* was living in her car without a safe, stable place to call home. Despite holding a steady job, the low rental vacancy rate in Ottawa County, coupled with rising costs made finding affordable housing incredibly challenging.
When Nancy reached out to us, she had already started taking bold steps to build toward stability; she knew finding housing would be challenging with her current income, and had begun searching for other employment options. While Nancy searched for a different job, our team offered compassion and encouragement, reminding her of her strength and potential.
One day, Nancy came to our team with exciting news—she had found a new job with higher pay and more consistent hours! With greater financial stability, Nancy remained hopeful for the future. While she waited for news on her housing status, Nancy visited Refresh—our partnership program with First United Methodist Church—where she could access critical resources like food, clothing, and a safe place to shower. At Refresh, she also built meaningful connections that helped her maintain hope and confidence.
In the fall, her perseverance paid off—Nancy had been approved for an apartment and finally had a safe, stable place to call home! Reflecting on the experience, Outreach Specialist, Lydia, shared, “All she needed was someone to believe in her and tell her she could do it, and then she did it all on her own.” Nancy showed us what’s possible when someone is equipped with encouragement, support, and the belief that they deserve to thrive. She built a brighter future, and we were honored to walk beside her.

Financial Wellness
When Elena* reached out to our Financial Wellness team last fall, her family was facing an urgent need: their furnace had stopped working just as colder weather arrived. A challenge that could have quickly become a crisis instead sparked a wave of collaboration. Our team immediately began reaching out to our partners across the community to see who might be able to provide support.
The following week, an HVAC repair company stepped in, willing to complete the repair for just the cost of parts. Soon after, a local church offered to cover that cost, ensuring the repair could happen without delay! Thanks to collaboration, quick action, and a compassionate community, Elena’s family found the support they needed during a time of crisis. With warmth restored, their home became a safe place again, and a foundation where Elena and her family can continue building a brighter future.

Community Kitchen
Last month, students from The Cave School had a special opportunity to connect with the community by choosing a local organization to volunteer with. Victor chose to spend his day at our Community Kitchen! At the Kitchen, he helped serve lunch and connected with our neighbors over a warm, nourishing meal.
Victor's experience left a lasting impression on both him and his family! Inspired by the sense of community and purpose he felt, Victor and his mom signed up to volunteer at Food Club the very next week! We love seeing families engage in nourishing our neighbors together, and we’re so grateful for our volunteers of all ages who help create a warm, welcoming space for everyone in our community. Thank you, Victor, for leading with compassion!
Program Highlight
Stocking the shelves and spreading hope!
When Beth set out to earn her Boy Scouts of America Venturing Summit Award, she knew she wanted her service project to build a stronger, healthier community. Through her school and church, Beth rallied support to collect food, personal care items, and financial donations to support Action House. In addition to the donated goods, Beth used the funds she raised to thoughtfully purchase items from our most-needed items list—making sure her drive directly addressed our community’s most pressing needs.
In total, Beth’s drive brought in 544 items—an incredible 692 pounds of support! It was the largest single food drive held between January and March 2025. Her effort is a powerful reminder that meaningful change often starts with just one person. Community-led drives like Beth’s keep our shelves stocked year-round and help ensure our neighbors have reliable access to the essentials they need to thrive!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month!
At Community Action House, we know that life’s challenges are rarely isolated. Food insecurity, housing instability, financial stress, and mental health are deeply connected—and complex problems call for comprehensive, compassionate solutions.
This May, we’re reflecting on mental health in our community, and how our work coupled with the collaboration of community partners like Mosaic Counseling is building a stronger, healthier community.
