Last Week COO Tracy Bolo met with Susan from WoodTV8 to share about our Lakeshore Food Rescue Initiative! Through immense volunteer and community support, we were able to rescue 1.2 million pounds of food in 2022 – food that would have otherwise gone to waste. With our partners at Ottawa Food, and using the well known Food Rescue Hero app, we're excited to use ARPA funding to rescue and redistribute even more across the county!
“We know that about 40% of our food gets wasted. What we are trying to do is find that waste, and get it into the hands of people that need it, reduce the impact to our environment, and feed more people” – Tracy Bolo
More than 22,000 people within Ottawa County alone face food insecurity and food rescue efforts help to rebalance the distribution of food to neighbors in need. In 2022, over 265,000 pounds of rescued food was shared with 30 external partner organizations. The program’s expansion will mean that more partners, across the county, can work with Lakeshore Food Rescue to deliver fresh, local food to their own visitors.
